MercurySteam, the developer behind Metroid Dread and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, has announced its new project, Blades of Fire, an original action game that channels the dark fantasy energy of its previous titles. The game is set to launch on May 22, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via the Epic Games Store. In Blades of Fire, players take on the role of Aran de Lira, a member of a knightly order tasked with stopping the increasingly evil Queen Nerea. Aran is accompanied by a scribe named Adso, who provides insights into defeating enemies and offers a unique perspective on the game's world.
The central hook of Blades of Fire is its weapon forging system, which allows players to craft their own weapons using items called "Forge Scrolls." The game features seven different weapon families, over 30 Forge Scrolls, and various materials to use, promising "almost infinite" combinations. Each weapon has different characteristics, such as weight, length, durability, penetration, and edge quality, which affect its performance in combat. Players must choose the right weapon for the job, depending on the enemy's armor, and can target specific parts of the enemy's body to deal the most damage.
The game's combat system is designed to be unique and challenging, with over 50 enemy types, each with its own attack style, weapon, and armor. Aran and Adso will explore epic environments, including huge castles and labyrinthine palaces, as they journey to liberate the land from Queen Nerea's rule. The game's story is promised to be a "showpiece epic," with a focus on telling the best story possible. The developer's commitment to creating a unique and beloved game is evident in its partnership with 505 Games, which is thrilled to partner with MercurySteam on Blades of Fire.
The game's system requirements have been listed on the Epic Games Store page, including Intel Core i7-11700KF or AMD Ryzen 5800X, 16GB of RAM, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT. The game is priced at $59.99, with a 10% pre-order discount available. Pre-order customers will also receive two in-game armors for Aran and additional forging materials. With its unique weapon forging system and challenging combat, Blades of Fire is set to be an exciting addition to the action-adventure genre.
MercurySteam's pedigree for creating unique and beloved games is well-established, and Blades of Fire promises to be another standout title in its portfolio. The game's announcement trailer and first screenshots are available to view, and the official website provides more information on the game's features and story. With its launch just around the corner, fans of action-adventure games are eagerly anticipating the release of Blades of Fire, and it will be interesting to see how the game's unique systems and features come together to create a compelling gaming experience.
