A former Brookside actor, Philip Foster, has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison for masterminding a £13.6 million fraud operation that targeted thousands of aspiring models. Foster, 49, who played Christian Wright in the Merseyside TV soap, ran a network of fake modelling agencies for more than eight years, exploiting the dreams of young models and their parents. The scam, which was uncovered after a six-year investigation by National Trading Standards (NTS), left over 6,000 victims in serious debt, causing lasting emotional distress and significant financial pressures.

The victims were duped into thinking that a model agency was interested in them, with emails telling them they had potential after they responded to a social media advertising campaign. They were then invited to a "free" test shoot at a photographic studio, where they were handed glossy brochures and told they had passed their studio test, but would need to buy a portfolio of images for the modelling agencies who were interested in them. Some victims used credit deals arranged by the fraudsters or expensive payday loans to make the upfront payment, only to receive poor quality digital photographs that stood no real chance of landing them professional jobs. Foster used the proceeds from the scam to buy high-end watches and cars, while many victims were left financially and emotionally devastated, feeling humiliated and betrayed.

The sham agencies, which paid no tax, existed for short periods before being dissolved and rebranded, making it difficult for authorities to track them down. Money from the scam was laundered through UK bank accounts before being transferred to Spain, or carried in cash on commercial flights by co-conspirators. The NTS investigation found that Foster's operation was highly organized, with a network of associates in England operating the sham modelling agencies and photography studios in cities including London, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Coventry, and Nottingham. The investigation also revealed that Foster lived a luxurious lifestyle in Spain, while his victims were left to deal with the consequences of his actions.

The sentences handed down to Foster and his associates reflect the severity of the crime, with eight other defendants receiving jail terms or suspended prison sentences for their roles in the scam. The case highlights the importance of being cautious when searching for modelling opportunities online, as legitimate agencies do not ask for money upfront. As councillor Greg White noted, "Foster and his fellow scammers cruelly exploited young hopefuls trying to break into one of the most competitive industries," leaving a trail of broken dreams and financial hardship. The consequences of Foster's actions will be felt for a long time, and it is essential for aspiring models to be aware of the risks of such scams and to take steps to protect themselves.

In conclusion, the case of Philip Foster and his associates serves as a reminder of the dangers of online scams and the importance of being vigilant when searching for opportunities. The sentences handed down to those involved in the scam reflect the severity of the crime, and it is hoped that this will serve as a deterrent to others who may be considering similar actions. As the modelling industry continues to grow, it is essential for aspiring models to be aware of the risks of such scams and to take steps to protect themselves, including researching agencies thoroughly and being cautious of any opportunities that seem too good to be true.
