Hunter Schafer, a transgender woman and star of the hit HBO teen drama Euphoria, has spoken out about a recent issue with her new US passport, which lists her as male despite her selecting female when filling out the paperwork. Schafer shared her experience on TikTok, showing the "M" marker on her new travel document and expressing her shock and disappointment. Her previous passport had listed her as female, and she had filled out the forms for the new passport indicating she was female.
Schafer's situation has sparked controversy and discussion on transgender rights and gender identity, with many criticizing the Trump administration's policies on the matter. The US now issues passports with only male or female designations, based on a person's sex recorded at birth, following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on his first day in office. The order recognizes only two sexes and declares they cannot be changed. Previously, Americans could select their gender for passports and also request to be listed as "X", which was offered as an option for non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming individuals.
Schafer's experience is not an isolated incident, as many transgender individuals have faced similar issues with their passports and other forms of identification. The Bureau of Consular Affairs, the agency that issues passports, says on its website that it will only issue passports with an M or F sex marker that match the customer's biological sex at birth. This policy has been met with criticism and legal challenges, with a group of transgender people filing a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Boston alleging the policy discriminates against individuals based on sex and transgender status and infringes First Amendment rights to free speech and expression.
