Magesi FC returned to the winning column in the Betway Premiership with a hard-fought 1-0 win against SuperSport United at the Seshego Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Despite SuperSport United dominating for large parts of the encounter, Mcedi Vandala won and converted a second-half penalty that ended Magesi’s two-match losing streak. The match saw both teams create goal-scoring chances, with SuperSport United's Aphiwe Baliti and Lebohang Maboe being notable players in the early stages of the game.
SuperSport United continued to dominate the ball possession statistic midway through the first-half but often fell short in the final third of the pitch. Despite Magesi recording a couple of shots at goal, it was still not enough to trouble the SuperSport United backline. As the half came to an end, the travelling side took the direct route in an attempt to affect the scoreline, mostly via failed attempts from range. The score remained at 0-0 at the end of the first 45 as neither side were able to make the most of their opportunities. The penalty kick by Vandala in the 66th minute proved to be the turning point in the match.
Magesi immediately went on the attack at the beginning of the second-half, as seen with Lehlohonolo Mtshali’s attempt at goal in the 48th minute. With SuperSport United momentarily on the back foot, the Tshwane giants were served with a couple of nervy moments leading up to the hour-mark. As a result of their forward pressure, Magesi were awarded a penalty in the 66th minute after Vandala drew a foul inside the area. After stepping up to the spot, Vandala made no mistake from 12-yards out and put his side ahead with a left-footed shot. The team's strategy to settle into game-management mode during the closing stages of the match paid off, as they were able to preserve their lead.
The match ended with Magesi securing the win, and the final score was:
- Magesi FC: 1 (Vandala 68’)
- SuperSport United: 0
- Magesi FC: Chipezeze, Abrahams, Makgoga, Buthelezi, Mokone, Darpoh, Vandala (Matima 83’), Mtshali, Mashikinya (Komane 83’), Mekoa (Makhubela 58’), Motupa (Manzini 78’)
- SuperSport United: Goss, Baliti, Ndebele, Okon, Mobbie, Ndlovu (Dzvukamanja 72’), Poggenpoel, Saile (Moloisane 64’), Maboe, Lungu, Magidigidi (Quaicoe 64’)
The win marked an important turning point for Magesi FC, as they looked to climb the rankings in the Betway Premiership. With this hard-fought victory, Magesi FC demonstrated their ability to perform under pressure and secure crucial wins against tough opponents like SuperSport United.
