The boxing world is mourning the loss of veteran fighter Carson Jones, who passed away at the age of 38 due to complications from surgery. Jones, a well-respected American super welterweight, had a long and successful career, fighting 65 professional bouts and winning 44 of them. He was a champion at USBA welterweight, NABA light-middleweight, WBC Continental Americas light-middleweight, and NABA USA light-middleweight, and reached No 4 in the world in the IBF's welterweight rankings.
Jones had been struggling with gastrointestinal issues, which affected his digestive tract, and had undergone surgery on his oesophagus. However, he suffered complications during the procedure and sadly passed away. The news was confirmed by former IBF super middleweight world champion Caleb Truax, who posted a tribute to Jones on social media, saying "Rest in paradise to my man. Boxing lost a good one, too early." Jones was renowned for his warrrior-like ability, often showing his toughness and willingness to take on anyone in the squared circle.
Jones had fought some of the biggest names in boxing, including Kell Brook, Ted Cheeseman, and Antonio Margarito. His fights against Brook, in particular, earned him the respect of fans and fellow fighters alike. Jones narrowly lost to Brook on points in 2012, but fought gamely and earned a draw from one of the judges. He then lost by stoppage in their rematch a year later. Jones' last fight was in October 2023, when he won against James Warren at light-heavyweight. The boxing community has been paying tribute to Jones, with British boxing referee Mark Lyson posting "Very sad to hear the news about the passing of Carson Jones at just 38. RIP Champ."
The list of Jones' achievements in the boxing world includes:
- USBA welterweight champion
- NABA light-middleweight champion
- WBC Continental Americas light-middleweight champion
- NABA USA light-middleweight champion
- Reached No 4 in the world in the IBF's welterweight rankings
The boxing world will deeply miss Carson Jones, and his legacy will live on through his achievements in the sport. As the boxing community continues to mourn his loss, they will also celebrate his life and career, remembering him as a true champion and a warrior of the sport.
