Vice President JD Vance took the stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland, where he discussed the Trump administration's fundamental goals, including restoring safety and prosperity to the American people. Vance touted the administration's success in its first month, citing the significant decrease in border crossings and the promotion of American energy dominance. He emphasized that the administration recognizes the need to crack down on illegal immigration, restore American energy dominance, and cut wasteful government spending through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Vance also addressed the migrant crisis, stating that the administration's goal is to secure the southern border and ensure that migrant criminals are held accountable. He emphasized that the administration's message to migrant criminals is clear: "get the hell out of our country because your free ride is over… you’re not welcome." Regarding American energy and the economy, Vance said that the administration recognizes the need to unlock the engine of American growth, citing the importance of energy independence and a growing economy that creates good jobs and high wages for the American people.
The vice president also criticized wasteful government spending under the Biden administration, citing examples of unnecessary projects and emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility. He stated that the fundamental goal of the administration's immigration policy, border policy, and efforts to save taxpayer money is to ensure that American children and grandchildren can raise a family in security and comfort in the country they love. Vance received a standing ovation after discussing his recent speech in Munich, where he spoke about the need for Europe to follow Trump's example of restricting illegal immigration and restoring free speech.
In related news, the Trump administration has been met with dozens of legal challenges as it continues its effort to cut much of the federal government. The Department of Government Efficiency is taking aim at agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service and Social Security Administration, arguing in court that Elon Musk is not the administrator of the newly-formed entity despite public comments from Trump to the contrary. The administration has also cut off funding to organizations that provide pro bono representation and other legal assistance to unaccompanied migrant children, sparking criticism from advocacy groups.
Additionally, a federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction blocking the Trump administration from enforcing an executive order that would have forced three transgender inmates into male prisons. The judge determined that transferring the transgender prisoners would likely violate the Eighth Amendment that protects against cruel and unusual punishment. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is also suing the Trump administration over its sudden suspension of funding for refugee resettlement, accusing the federal government of trying to "pull the rug out from under" the nonprofit group. The funding pause has been "devastating" for the 6,700 refugees still within their 90-day transition period, costing the nonprofit millions in unpaid bills and prompting the group to lay off 50 employees.
