The counting of votes for the Telangana Legislative Council elections to the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies has commenced at the designated counting centre in Karimnagar. The elaborate process of counting is expected to stretch beyond 24 hours, given that ballot papers were used in the MLC elections in adherence to the preferential voting system. A total of 2,50,106 voters cast their ballots in the Graduates’ MLC polls, while 24,895 teachers exercised their franchise in the Teachers’ MLC elections held on February 27.

The sealed strong rooms were opened in the presence of the candidates, counting agents, and election observers at 8 a.m. on Monday. Collector Pamela Satpathy, who is the Returning Officer, was present to oversee the counting process. Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place at the counting centre, with 400 police personnel deployed in and around the stadium to maintain law and order. The Graduates’ MLC elections witnessed a tough electoral battle, with the ruling Congress conducting an extensive election campaign to retain the seat and the BJP spearheading a whirlwind electioneering to wrest the seat in north Telangana.

Political observers feel that the Graduates’ MLC poll outcome is significant for both the national parties ahead of the upcoming local body elections in the State. The Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar graduates’ constituency recorded a 70.4 per cent voter turnout, while the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar teachers’ constituency registered a 91.9 per cent turnout. As many as 56 candidates are in the fray in the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar graduates constituency, with the big contest being between the ruling Congress party and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The election campaign was marked by intense rivalry between the two parties, with each trying to outdo the other in a bid to win the seat.

The counting process is being closely watched by all the stakeholders, including the candidates, their supporters, and the election authorities. The results of the MLC elections are expected to have a significant impact on the political landscape of Telangana, particularly in the run-up to the local body elections. The security arrangements at the counting centre have been beefed up to prevent any untoward incidents, with a large contingent of police personnel deployed to maintain law and order. The outcome of the MLC elections will be keenly watched by all, as it is expected to have a significant bearing on the future of the State's politics.
