Motorists have been warned of upcoming chaos on the M25 due to road closures in March, which are set to disrupt journeys to and from Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The road closures are part of works to improve Junction 10 at Wisley, and will include some closures on entry and exit slip roads. Additionally, there will be two full motorway closures in the Surrey area over the next few months, with the first closure taking place from 9pm on Friday, 7 March, until 6am on Monday, 10 March, and the second closure from 9pm on Friday, 21 March, to 6am on Monday, 24 March.
Drivers have been urged to plan ahead to save themselves from major disruption on the vital motorway, with expert advice to consider alternative routes and means of transport, such as train services that go direct into the airport terminal. The roadworks are expected to cause significant delays, and motorists are advised to allow plenty of time to get to the airports. The transport network is likely to face major delays, and travellers should be prepared for disruptions to their journeys.
A list of key events and closures includes: * 7-10 March: Full motorway closure between Junction 10 (Wisley) and Junction 11 (Woking) * 21-24 March: Full motorway closure between Junction 10 (Wisley) and Junction 11 (Woking) * 11-14 April: Closure of the A3 in both directions between Junction 10 and Cobham Roundabout/A245 * Summer 2025: Completion of the £317 million upgrade of Junction 10. The upgrades are expected to improve safety and reduce congestion at Junction 10, but in the meantime, motorists should be prepared for significant disruptions to their journeys.
Motorists heading east from North Devon, particularly those travelling to Gatwick, should expect delays and consider alternative routes. Diversions will be in place, but congestion is likely on surrounding roads. The improvements to Junction 10 are scheduled for completion by summer 2025, and are expected to help ease congestion and create safer journeys for thousands of drivers each day.
In addition to the road closures, motorists should be aware of the potential for compensation if they miss their flights due to the disruptions. However, as the disruptions are not related to airlines or airports, it is unlikely that compensation will be offered. Motorists are advised to check their travel insurance policies to see if they are covered for missed flights, and to plan ahead to minimize the risk of disruptions to their journeys.
