Health Canada has issued a recall advisory for certain LG free-standing electric ranges due to a fire risk posed by the accidental activation of the front knobs. The knobs that control the stovetop elements can be activated by "accidental contact by humans or pets," leading to a risk of fire. As of February 12, the company had received eight reports of incidents in Canada and two reports of injuries, including one minor cut and one minor burn.

The recall affects over 137,000 units of the affected stoves sold in Canada between 2016 and June 2024. The LG electric ranges included in the recall have five surface elements on the stovetop and knobs mounted on the front of the range right above the door to the oven. To determine if an electric range is part of the recall, consumers can look inside the oven door or storage drawer at the bottom of the oven to find the model number and check if it matches those listed in the recall. If the electric range is one of the devices included in the recall, it doesn't mean that it has to be thrown out — the advisory states that while customers should immediately contact LG Electronics Canada Inc., they can continue using their range while waiting to hear back.

Customers will receive a free warning label and placement instructions after they alert the company that they own an affected model. The label reminds consumers to use LG's Lock Out/Control Lock function on the range control panel to disable activation of the heating elements when the range is not in use. The company also urged customers who owned these models to view an instructional video outlining how to use the control lock. Meanwhile, in the US, roughly 500,000 affected models were sold between 2015 and January 2025, according to a recall posted earlier this month by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

At least 86 reports of unintentional activation of the front-mounted knobs have been lodged in the US, the recall stated, with at least eight minor injuries reported and five fires started due to the affected ranges, totaling over $340,000 US in property damage. Three of the fires reported involved pet deaths. The recall highlights the importance of safety precautions when using electric ranges and the need for consumers to be aware of potential hazards. By taking the necessary steps to address the issue, LG Electronics Canada Inc. aims to minimize the risk of accidents and ensure the well-being of its customers.

In other news, the gaming community is abuzz with the release of Monster Hunter Wilds, with some critics noting that the game may be too easy. However, this has not deterred fans, who are eagerly awaiting the game's launch. The recall of LG electric ranges serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing consumer safety and taking proactive measures to address potential hazards. As the gaming community continues to grow and evolve, it is essential to maintain a focus on safety and responsibility, both in the virtual and real worlds.
