Background and Charges

Former Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson and city politician Derek Hatton have been charged with bribery and misconduct in public office, relating to council contracts. The charges come after a Merseyside Police probe, Operation Aloft, focused on a number of property developers. Mr Anderson and Mr Hatton were first arrested in 2020 as part of an investigation into the awarding of building contracts. A total of 12 people have been charged with offences related to bribery and misconduct over the awarding of contracts from Liverpool city council between 2010 and 2020.

Investigation and Proceedings

The investigation, led by Merseyside Police, has been ongoing since 2020. Robin Weyell, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor, said: "The CPS has reviewed a full file of evidence from the Merseyside Police and has authorised the investigation team to charge 12 people with 12 offences related to bribery and misconduct in public office." The 12 defendants are due to appear at Preston Magistrates' Court on 28 March. The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against these defendants are now active and that they have a right to a fair trial.

Reaction and Implications

Joe Anderson has denied the charges and said he will fight to clear his name. He has previously denied the claims and criticised the length of the investigation. Liverpool City Council said it had "undergone a huge transformation journey" since the arrests in Operation Aloft, including appointing a new chief executive and new senior management team. The council leader, Liam Robinson, is also new. The council has actively supported the police investigation and will continue to cooperate as required. The charges have significant implications for the city of Liverpool and its governance, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in public office.
