A clash between Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and a group of Bangladeshi smugglers resulted in injuries to one BSF jawan and one Bangladeshi smuggler at Putia in Sepahijala district of Tripura on Friday evening. The BSF stated that the on-duty personnel noticed a group of 20-25 Bangladeshi miscreants intruding into the state through Putia for smuggling along with some Indian miscreants. As the BSF cautioned them, the miscreants attacked them twice and tried to snatch their weapons, leaving one BSF jawan injured.

The BSF jawan fired one round of PAG (non-lethal weapon) in self-defence, injuring one Bangladeshi smuggler. Both the injured were shifted to a hospital for treatment. This incident is not an isolated one, as earlier in January, a team of on-duty BSF was attacked by a group of Bangladeshi smugglers near the India-Bangladesh international border under Magroli in Tripura's Unakoti district. However, no one was injured from either side in that incident. In March last year, a Bangladeshi smuggler was killed and two BSF personnel sustained injuries during a clash in Magroli. The international border between India and Bangladesh in Tripura is 856 km long, with most of it covered by a barbed wire fence, but a few patches are still unfenced, making it vulnerable to smuggling activities.

In a similar incident reported by another source, a Bangladeshi citizen was shot dead by BSF in Tripura's Sepahijala district after a group of smugglers from both sides of the international boundary attacked the border guards. The Border Security Force said one of its employees was also injured in the attack by the smugglers. A group of 20 to 25 Bangladeshi miscreants entered the Indian territory at Putia under Kalamchoura police station and met several Indian associates late on Friday evening. As the BSF challenged them, the smugglers attacked the border guards, injuring one of them.

When smugglers attacked the BSF personnel again and tried to snatch their weapons, a jawan opened one round of fire from a pump action gun for self-defence. One smuggler was injured and taken to Bishalgarh hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The jawan who suffered injuries in the attack is also undergoing treatment in the same hospital. These incidents highlight the need for increased vigilance and security measures along the Indo-Bangladesh border to prevent smuggling and other illegal activities.
