The UK is experiencing a surge in hospital admissions for elderly individuals with flu and pneumonia, with record highs reported in England. According to data from the UK Health Security Agency, hospital admissions for those aged over 85 have been at a post-pandemic record high every other week since the start of the 2024/25 flu season. The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have partly blamed Labour's cut to the winter fuel allowance for the increase in admissions. The winter fuel allowance, a single tax-free payment to help pensioners pay for their heating during the coldest months of the year, was previously a universal benefit for pensioners.
The Telegraph analysis of the UK Health Security Agency data shows that hospital admissions in England for those aged over 85 have been at a post-pandemic record high every other week since the start of the 2024/25 flu season. The Conservatives have sought to link the record-breaking data to the Government's "reckless decision to slash heating support for pensioners" while the Liberal Democrats said Labour were "putting pensioners at the back of the queue at every turn". This winter has seen new highs set in 10 of the 20 weeks of the season so far, with comparable records going back to 2021/22. The figures peaked at Christmas, with the admission rate being almost 20 per cent higher than the previous record for the same period two years ago.
Deaths across all age groups from influenza or pneumonia also hit record highs in the first weeks of the year. Ed Argar, the shadow health secretary, said that the statistics highlight the real risk to health from flu and pneumonia, a risk made worse for 10 million pensioners by Labour's cut to their Winter Fuel Payments. The NHS could clarify the position by simply publishing the data – the number of admissions with, and without, the flu vaccine. The alternative is to make the flu vaccine compulsory for elderly people. Caroline Abrahams, a charity director at Age UK, said that the figures highlight a particularly nasty flu season and demonstrate why it's so important for older people to take up their vaccines when offered.
The winter fuel allowance cut has been a contentious issue, with some 70 per cent of disabled pensioners, around 1.6 million people, projected to lose the benefit under the new restrictions, according to the Government's own analysis of the policy. Around 100,000 pensioners were projected to be forced into fuel poverty by the move. A government spokesman said that they are committed to supporting pensioners – with millions of pensioners continuing to receive their Winter Fuel Payment and are also set to see their state pension rise by up to £1,900 this Parliament through their commitment to the Triple Lock. The spokesman also stated that they've taken urgent action to support the NHS, including delivering two million more appointments, millions of vaccinations including RSV for the first time, and ending strikes so that staff are on the front line, not the picket line for the first winter in three years.
Some have suggested that a more likely cause of the increase in hospital admissions is that patients may not have had the flu vaccine. The NHS could clarify the position by simply publishing the data – the number of admissions with, and without, the vaccine. The alternative is to make the flu vaccine compulsory for elderly people. Others have argued that the cut to the winter fuel allowance has put pensioners at risk, particularly those who are disabled or living in poverty. The issue has sparked a debate about the importance of supporting vulnerable populations, particularly during the winter months when they are most at risk. The following are some key points to consider: * Hospital admissions for over-85s with flu and pneumonia have reached a post-pandemic record high in England * The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have blamed Labour's cut to the winter fuel allowance for the increase in admissions * The winter fuel allowance cut has been a contentious issue, with some 70 per cent of disabled pensioners projected to lose the benefit * The NHS could clarify the position by simply publishing the data – the number of admissions with, and without, the flu vaccine * The alternative is to make the flu vaccine compulsory for elderly people
