Jerry Butler, a renowned soul singer of the 1960s, has passed away at the age of 85 due to complications from Parkinson's disease. Born in Mississippi, Butler grew up in Chicago and began his music career at a young age, eventually becoming a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a three-time Grammy Award nominee. His rich, intimate baritone voice graced numerous hits, including "For Your Precious Love," "Only the Strong Survive," and "Make It Easy On Yourself."

In addition to his music career, Butler also made a name for himself in politics, serving on the Cook County Board of Commissioners in Illinois from 1985 to 2018. He was encouraged to enter politics by the 1983 election of Harold Washington, Chicago's first Black mayor, and went on to support various causes, including the Rhythm & Blues Foundation, which provides assistance to musicians. Some of his notable performances include a 1961 cover of "Moon River" and a 1969 performance of "Only the Strong Survive" at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
Butler's legacy extends beyond his own music, with his songs being covered by numerous artists, including Elvis Presley, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and Snoop Dogg. He was also an inspiration to many musicians, with his unique voice and style influencing a generation of soul and R&B artists. Some of his notable collaborations include work with Curtis Mayfield, with whom he co-founded the Impressions, and Gamble and Huff, with whom he created some of his most iconic hits.
Butler is survived by his twin sons and a legacy of music that continues to inspire and influence new generations of artists and fans. His impact on the music industry is immeasurable, and his contributions to the world of soul and R&B will be remembered for years to come.
