The 97th Academy Awards, which took place on Sunday, March 2, 2025, was a night to remember, with "Anora" winning big and taking home five awards, including best picture and best director. Sean Baker, who directed, edited, wrote, and co-produced "Anora," won four Oscars, tying Walt Disney's record for the most Academy Awards won by a single person in one year. Baker's achievement was all the more impressive as he won all four awards for the same movie, while Disney won for four different projects at the 1954 ceremony.
"Emilia Pérez" had the most nominations this year with 13, including nods for best picture, best director, best writing, and multiple acting nominations. Karla Sofía Gascón made Oscar history when she became the first transgender woman to be nominated in any acting category, receiving a best actress nomination for playing the film's title role. However, the award for best actress ultimately went to Mikey Madison, who played the title role in "Anora." Other notable winners included Adrian Brody, who won his second best actor Oscar for his role as architect László Tóth in "The Brutalist," and Zoe Saldaña, who won best supporting actress, one of just two wins for "Emilia Pérez" on Sunday night.
The ceremony, which was helmed by former "Late Night" and "The Tonight Show" host Conan O'Brien, also saw Kieran Culkin win the Oscar for best supporting actor for his portrayal of Benji in Jesse Eisenberg's "A Real Pain." Culkin's win marked his first Oscar nomination and victory, and he triumphed over nominees Guy Pearce, Edward Norton, Yura Borisov, and Jeremy Strong. The category was one of few with a clear favorite ahead of this year's ceremony, after Culkin picked up the Golden Globe, BAFTA, Independent Spirit Award, SAG Award, and a slew of critics awards earlier this month.
Some of the notable movies that were nominated for the 97th Academy Awards include:
- "Anora" - won five awards, including best picture and best director
- "Emilia Pérez" - had the most nominations with 13
- "Wicked" - based on the hit Broadway musical, and had 10 nominations
- "The Brutalist" - had 10 nominations, including best picture and best director
- "A Real Pain" - won the award for best supporting actor
- "A Complete Unknown" - starred Timothée Chalamet as the iconic folk singer Bob Dylan
The winners and nominees of the 97th Academy Awards were announced on Sunday, March 2, 2025, and the full list of winners and nominees can be found on the official Academy Awards website. The ceremony was attended by many celebrities, including Brenda Song and Macaulay Culkin, who arrived at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Kieran Culkin, who won the award for best supporting actor, posed in the press room at the Oscars, and his wife, Jazz Charton, was by his side throughout the night.
