KALKI 2898 AD Movie Review and Release Highlights

A brilliant and epic block buster Amitabh Bachchan and Prabhas power director Nag Ashwin’s ambitious mythology-inspired science fiction film that soars, but falls just short of being a game-changer.

Kalki 2898 AD stars Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani among others. While Rebel star Prabhas plays Bhairava, a fun, modern saviour, Deepika may be visible as Sumati, a mother once more, after Ayan Mukerji's Brahmastra 2 years ago and Atlee's Jawan closing 12 months. This time, she performs the mom of an unborn toddler, who the evil forces want to kill, due to the fact that it is proclaimed to be Kalki, the 10th incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

The unborn child is protected by Ashwatthama (played by Amitabh Bachchan), who seems to be inspired by the immortal Ashwatthama (Dronacharya son) from the Mahabharata. He's lived through ages, thanks to the gemstone fixed on his forehead. In the trailer, we see a younger, de-aged version of Amitabh in a flashback glimpse as well.

Kamal Haasan stars as Yaskin, presumably the main villain of Kalki 2898 AD, who wants to kill Sumati's unborn child, who might be the cure to the Kalyug he's created. Disha Patani will be seen as Roxie, a bounty hunter, and Keerthy Suresh has dubbed for Buji, a futuristic car who's the sidekick of Bhairava.

Kalki 2898 AD, which opens during the Kurukshetra war and culminates with an encounter between Lord Krishna and Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan), leaps across 6,000 years plays out 874 years in the future. Kaliyug is upon mankind, evil has overrun the world, the Ganga has run dry, infertility has gripped humanity and people wait hopelessly for divine deliverance.

The narrative goes back and forth from the Kurukshetra war to Kasi and Shambala, 6000 years after the war. Kasi is depicted as the last surviving city but everything is in shambles. The mighty Ganges has dried up and food is scarce. Everything required to support life, water, food and air, is within a Complex, a towering inverted pyramid structure that is out of bounds for common folks, and governed by Supreme Yaskin or Kali (Kamal Haasan). Shambala is a hidden refuge for people from different faiths and cultures who are willing to risk their lives for a better tomorrow.
