The Indian cricket team will return to action for the first time since their memorable triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024. Zimbabwe host India in the five-match T20I series at Harare Sports Club starting on Saturday, July 6.
The Indian batters put up a sloppy batting display to lose to Zimbabwe by 13 runs in the first T20I of the five-match series, India chose to field a young side, handing three debut caps - Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel and the trio have a forgettable match with the bat.
In pursuit of a target of 116, the newly crowned World Champions returned with eight-digit scores to reach 102 in 19.5 overs. Earlier, Shubman Gill, the captain of India, won the toss and chose to bowl against Zimbabwe in Harare. Abhishek Sharma and Riyan Parag debut for the international side. After playing Test cricket for India, Dhruv Jurel made his T20I debut. As Shubman Gill takes on the bat, the young brigade is ready to begin the transitional phase in the shortest possible amount during this year's T20I series against Zimbabwe. India's new captain, Gill, will aim to demonstrate a point on his first assignment after missing out on the last 15 players of the T20 World Cup squad. Senior players Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja have announced their retirement from T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup. Shubman will oversee the group of young IPL players, with Abhishek Sharma, Harshit Rana, Riyan Parag, and Tushar Deshpande preparing to make their debut on the big stage.
None of India's World Cup winners will be in action in the first two matches on Saturday and Sunday, but squad members Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shivam Dube and Sanju Samson will be available for the last three games. Shubman has already announced that Abhishek will make his international debut in the first T20I and open the innings alongside him. Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad will bat at number 3, meanwhile, Riyan is also expected to make his debut and bat at the number 4 position, where he batted in IPL 2024 for Rajasthan Royals. With India yet to announce a long-term successor to Dravid, interim coach VVS Laxman will be in charge in Harare.
