Parliament Session Live Updates: PM Modi, his Council of Ministers take oath as MPs of 18th Lok Sabha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took oath of secrecy as he welcomed all newly-elected MPs on the first day of the 18th Lok Sabha Session. BJP’s Bhartruhari Mahtab was sworn in as the pro-tem Speaker of the House.

This term, the NDA holds a majority with 293 seats, while the BJP has 240 seats, which is just shy of the 272 majority mark on its own. The Opposition INDIA bloc on the other hand has 234 seats.

The inaugural special Lok Sabha session of Parliament will likely see the Opposition raise the NEET paper-leak issue as well as the 2024 Lok Sabha Election mandate. Modi returned to power for a third consecutive term earlier this month. Modi and his Council of Ministers took oath on June 9.

As the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha commenced today in Modi 3.0, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath as the member of the House. The PM said all efforts will be made to move forward with “consensus” to serve the people of the country. “May it be a productive one… I hope the Opposition fulfills the responsibility as the opposition of the people and meets their expectations of debate and vigilance as opposed to disturbance and drama,” he added.

Meanwhile, the seven-term MP Bhartruhari Mahtab who was appointed as the pro-tem Speaker was administered oath by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan. The first session will have eight sittings and will go on till July 3.

Upset with the appointment of Pro-tem speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab, INDIA bloc MPs, who are members of the pro-tem committee said they will boycott the panel and will not assist the pro-tem speaker in administering the oath.
