ICMR warms to minimize Sugarcane Juice Consumption

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in partnership with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), has implemented 17 fresh guidelines to encourage better dietary practices and enhance overall public health.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) warns against sugarcane juice due to its high sugar content. Alongside, it advises avoiding soft drinks, fruit juices with added sugar, and excessive tea and coffee consumption due to health risks. The ICMR recommends whole fruits and healthier alternatives, promoting a balanced diet and new guidelines for better eating habits for overall public health.

ICMR warms to minimize Sugarcane Juice Consumption

With the increase in temperatures, individuals often seek out refreshing beverages such as juices and cold drinks to cool off. One popular option is sugarcane juice, commonly enjoyed in Indian homes, particularly during the hot summer season. Nevertheless, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has raised concerns about the high sugar levels in sugarcane juice, urging people to limit their intake. Working alongside the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), the ICMR has unveiled 17 fresh guidelines designed to encourage better dietary choices and enhance overall public health.

The ICMR's cautionary message extends beyond sugarcane juice to encompass soft drinks, fruit juices containing added sugar, and even excessive consumption of tea and coffee. Although these beverages are widely consumed, they carry potential health hazards when consumed in large quantities. Soft drinks and fruit juices can contribute to excessive sugar consumption, while tea and coffee, due to their caffeine content, present their own set of risks. The ICMR underscores the significance of maintaining a balanced diet that includes ample servings of whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and seafood. By adhering to these guidelines, individuals can make healthier dietary choices and mitigate the risks associated with high sugar and caffeine intake.
