Background and Charges
Ryan Wedding, a former Olympic snowboarder who represented Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics, has been accused of running a transnational drug trafficking operation that shipped hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from Colombia to the United States and Canada. He is also alleged to have orchestrated multiple murders and an attempted murder in connection with the drug trafficking operation. Wedding, who is believed to reside in Mexico, has been added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, with a $10 million reward offered for his capture.
Investigation and International Cooperation
The investigation into Wedding's alleged activities is being conducted by the FBI, in cooperation with international law enforcement partners, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the United States Department of State. The case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, which aims to disrupt and dismantle high-level criminal organizations that threaten the United States. The FBI is urging anyone with information about Wedding's whereabouts to contact them, and is offering an additional $50,000 reward for information leading to his apprehension, arrest, and extradition.
Consequences and Rewards
If convicted, Wedding faces a mandatory minimum penalty of life in federal prison for the continuing criminal enterprise charge, as well as additional penalties for the murder and attempted murder charges. The $10 million reward offered by the State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs is in addition to the $50,000 reward already offered by the FBI, and is intended to encourage the public to come forward with information that can help bring Wedding to justice. The FBI and its international partners are committed to protecting communities from the threat of transnational crime, and are working tirelessly to bring Wedding and other fugitives to justice.
